2008…another year of democratic demise?
The Democrats have a problem, a real problem! Some might say the problem is not having a candidate for their nomination yet. Others might say the problem has been a crisis of identity in this post 9/11 world. Moreover, people are saying the problem is deeper, like, a major division within the party. Well, I guess we can change the democrats having a problem to the democrats having problemS (plural).
I just read an article in the washington post about Hillary Clinton’s rich supporters rebuking the Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi’s remarks on the super delegates. Pelosi suggested that the super delegates back the candidate with the most votes, so in response Clinton’s rich friends wrote a letter. The letter made it clear that the fundraisers believe their voice should carry real weight with the speaker. Noting their past financial support, they wrote, “We . . . hope you will be responsive to some of your major enthusiastic supporters.” This is scary, not because it sounds like something from the republican playbook, but because these rich Clinton people are suggesting that they are more important because they contribute large sums of money to the democratic party, and Pelosi better listen or else. Both Clinton and McCain have to rely on supporters like these to raise money. Because they would be unable to support a national campaign with out that kind of large donor support.
Anyway, back to the democratic demise. If these Clinton supporters truly feel they are more important because they have more money, and actually get their way, then the democrats have a big problem, a problem similar to the one the republicans overcame with their nomination. As we all know, the republicans overcame the extreme wealthy members of their party and put forth the moderate old geezer instead of the ex-independent, right-wing Mormon. The democratic party needs a similar purging process, the moderate voice needs to rise above the extreme left and take their party back! I feel that if the moderate voice does not do this soon, and this nomination fiasco goes all the way to the convention, then the republicans will find themselves laughing all the way to a victory in November. Here’s to more tax cuts for the wealthy, and more wars in the middle east (thumbs down fart noise!)
